The big winner of the local elections was the Social Democratic Party (PSD), which secured 136 municipal councils, including Lisbon, Porto, Sintra, Vila Nova de Gaia, and Cascais. Although losing overall municipal leadership, the Socialist Party (PS) showed signs of recovery after its defeat in the May legislative elections, with symbolic victories in Viseu and Guimarães. Far-right party Chega won three municipalities for the first time, a milestone in its trajectory, but far from the result it had hoped for.
With this result, the PSD will regain control of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities and the National Association of Parishes, positions it had not held for 12 years. The final results confirm the persistence of bipartisanship between the PSD and the PS when it comes to local power.
